It is interesting that the media seems to rarely do its home work. With regards to the comparison of Barack Obama and the late Franklin Delano Roosevelt there is quite a difference how the Congress operated then and now. As to “cloture,” which existed in FDR’s time, as it does today, the majority then needed 66% of the then 96 Senators or 64 votes to bring a vote to the floor or stop a filibuster.

Where has all the time gone? I am sure all of us ask that question quite often. This past July 27th was our 40th anniversary and we celebrated by having a party this past Saturday with 40 (or so) of our friends and family.. Some had other obligations that were long planned, others were too far away, and a few, here and there, had physical limitations. We wondered if all the invitees had been able to attend, would we have been able to accommodate them!

In 1884, the Chicago Cubs, who were known that season as the White Stockings also, played in Lake Front Park, where the dimensions in feet were from left to right: 186, 300, and 196. In that season where they played only 112 games, the 4th place Cubs finished 4th with a record of 62 and 50, under the legendary and infamous Adrian “Cap” Anson, who had a great deal with baseball’s “color barrier.”

The other day a black man was arrested and led away in handcuffs in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Historically would that be a big story which would resonate around the world and be mentioned in a press conference by the President of the United States? In most cases it would not. There have been plenty of African-American people arrested and incarcerated in the United States for good and bad reasons for more time than anyone alive could remember.

Franconia Notch is a wondrous stretch of real estate nestled in the White Mountains, not far from Lincoln, and Woodstock, New Hampshire. We spent time with our kids, Dana and Jon, at a marvelous time-sharing resort called the Villages of Loon Mountain. They drove up from Boston, a distance of 130 or so miles, and we drove up from the Mass Pike north on 495 to I-93 to Lincoln. It’s a five hour, 320 mile trip on wide-open 65 mph roads. Luckily there was very little traffic.

I can’t say that I have spent an inordinate amount of time at any of the three Yankee Stadiums that have existed in my lifetime. But nowI have been now to all three incarnations of the House that Ruth built. My first visit to “the big ballpark in the Bronx,” as the late, great Mel Allen would describe Yankee Stadium, was way back in 1951, when Harry S Truman was president.

In the ongoing discussion regarding the bombing of Auschwitz, I have included with this essay a declassified exchange of letters between John J. McCloy and John Pehle. John Pehle was the Executive Director of the War Refugee Board and John McCloy was the Assistant Secretary of War. For what it is worth, McCloy made his argument in 1944 about the problem of long-range bombing.

Speaking of collecting, as an accumulator of various items over the years, Wedgwood, British Commemorative China, FDR memorabilia, toy soldiers, magazines, newspapers, stamps, glassware, and assorted other things, I pay attention, now and again, to the market. This was a big story over the past few days. But I can recall that about 25+ years ago when this same style button became available (there are about 7-12 around I believe) there was another bidding war. At that time the late Malcolm Forbes Sr. was adding to his Forbes Museum on 5th Avenue and 13th Street.

Ms. Hollingsworth characterization of FDR's actions in creating the New Deal, and reversing the economy's freefall are sophomoric and inaccurate. FDR made few mistakes in his first term. Growth exceeded 9% a year and unemployment which was over 25% with another 25% only working part time in 1933 was reduced to 14% by September of 1937.
